Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 8, 2026
TakeTheWheel is a personal scheduling and focus tool. This policy explains what data the TakeTheWheel web app and its browser extension collect, how they use it, and the choices you have. We’ve tried to keep it short and plain.
The short version
- Your data is used only to run the service for you.
- We don’t sell your data, show ads, or share it with third parties for their own purposes.
- The browser extension talks only to your own TakeTheWheel account — nowhere else.
- You can delete your account and data at any time.
Information we collect
Account information. When you register, we store your email address and a securely hashed password so you can sign in.
Your content. The tasks, schedules, focus sessions, blocked-site list, and settings you create in the app. This is the information the service exists to manage on your behalf.
Calendar data (optional). If you connect a Google Calendar, we access your calendar events to fit your schedule around them. You can disconnect this at any time in Settings, which stops further access.
Operational data. Basic technical records needed to run and secure the service (for example, server logs). We don’t use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.
The browser extension
The TakeTheWheel browser extension lets you block distracting sites during a focus session and manage your tasks and sessions from the toolbar. Here’s how it handles data:
- Access token. To act on your behalf, the extension stores an access token you generate from your account. It’s kept in the browser’s local extension storage and sent only to your TakeTheWheel server to authenticate your requests. You can revoke it any time from Settings → Connected devices.
- Your tasks and sessions. The extension reads and updates your tasks, schedule, and focus sessions by talking to your TakeTheWheel account — the same data you see in the web app. It is not sent anywhere else.
- Site blocking. While a focus session is active, the extension blocks the sites on your blocklist in your browser. It does this locally using the browser’s blocking rules. It does not read the content of the pages you visit, and it does not send your browsing history anywhere.
- Permissions. The extension requests only the permissions it needs to do the above — browser storage, scheduled background checks, the site-blocking API, and access to sites so it can block the ones on your list. It does not use these to collect or transmit your browsing activity.
How we use your information
We use your information solely to provide and improve the service for you: to build and display your schedule, run focus sessions, enforce your blocklist, sync with your calendar if connected, and keep your account secure. We do not sell your personal information.
Sharing
We don’t share your personal information with third parties except: service providers that help us run the service (such as hosting), acting on our instructions; when required by law; or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the service. If you connect Google Calendar, data is exchanged with Google only to provide that integration, subject to Google’s own terms and privacy policy.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your content, revoke extension access tokens, or request deletion of your account at any time; deleting your account removes your associated data from the service.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and hashed passwords. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to safeguard your data.
Children
TakeTheWheel is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “last updated” date above. Significant changes will be communicated through the service.
